Now our Secret Annexe has truly become secret.... Mr Kugler thought it would be better to have a bookcase built in front of the entrance to our hiding place. It swings out on its hinges and opens like a door.

Anne Frank Awards 2008

On Wednesday 16th July 2008, over 300 guests attended the star studded Anne Frank Awards in the beautiful BBC Radio Theatre.  The Awards honoured 2008's inspirational winners - young people and educators who have shown great personal strength, moral courage and determination to stand up for what is right, and who have made a real difference in their community.

Ade Adepitan hosted the event and the awards were presented by a range of celebrities, including Mo George (Gus from Eastenders), Georgia Slowe (Emmerdale), Nathaniel Parker (Inspector Linley), John Pienaar (BBC political correspondent), Dean Andrews (Life on Mars) and Tamsin Greig, who plays Edith Frank in the forthcoming BBC drama of The Diary of Anne Frank.   We were also delighted to welcome Ellie Kendrick as a presenter, the young actress who plays Anne Frank in the forthcoming BBC drama.

The guests enjoyed some brilliant artistic performances from James Gadd, lead singer of Pirate Casino, acoustic guitarist Kit Holmes, and up and coming musician Edmund Jeffrey . The Special Guest Performance was by the soprano Natasha Marsh, whose exquisite voice held us spellbound in the moving final song "You'll Never Walk Alone", for which she was joined on stage by all the winners (pictured above).

Following the event, the winners travelled by Eurostar to Amsterdam on a VIP trip to visit the Anne Frank House to gain a deeper understanding of Anne’s story and how it relates to their own lives and experiences.
