Daily Mirror readers vote Anne "most inspiring"
To mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day this year on 8th March, the Daily Mirror newspaper ran an online poll to find Britain's most inspiring woman of the past century.
Anne Frank came top in the poll as the woman who has singularly inspired, influenced and shaped the world more than any other. Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher and Marie Curie were among the 50 other women in the poll.
Gillian Walnes MBE, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Anne Frank Trust said: “We were all delighted at the Trust when we read this result…But not surprised as we know the force for good that she is to the thousands of young people each year who visit Anne Frank exhibitions or take part in educational projects about her life and diary.”
Since its publication in 1947, Anne's diary has been translated into over 70 languages. It is used widely to teach young people in primary and secondary schools about the Holocaust, as well as current societal issues.
The results of the poll confirm Anne’s continuing relevance in today’s society.
