Now our Secret Annexe has truly become secret.... Mr Kugler thought it would be better to have a bookcase built in front of the entrance to our hiding place. It swings out on its hinges and opens like a door.

Northumberland hosts an Anne Frank community cohesion festival

Guest speakers, a stage play, a film screening and an exhibition will form part of The Anne Frank Community Cohesion Festival due to take place in Northumberland during May. The exhibition Anne Frank; A History for Today will be open to the public during the weekends of the 8-9, 15-16 and 22-23 May from 10am to 5pm.

Robin Casson, Director of Learning and Skills for Northumberland County Council, said:

“We hope that people will take the opportunity to benefit from the festival, which through a variety of events, will focus on the relevance and impact of prejudice and social discrimination in our day-to-day lives. The festival fits into the council’s work to support schools and other organisations in their duties to promote community cohesion and it also promises to be extremely interesting and thought-provoking.”

The exhibition will be supported by a series of evening events as follows:
Thursday 13 May – Launch of the festival including a talk by Sylvia Hurst, a Kindertransportee
Friday 21 May
– The award winning Ensemble Theatre Company stage ‘The Uninvited’. Followed by a discussion and debate about the issues of refugees, asylum seekers and human rights, chaired by the Anne Frank Trust and Amnesty International.
Wednesday 26 May – Film screening of ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’
