The Anne Frank Trust Annual Lunch 2024
Thursday 18th January
to mark Holocaust Memorial Day
London Hilton, Park Lane
12.00pm – 2.30pm

Compere: Jo Coburn
Guest Speaker: Sir Michael Morpurgo

You are warmly invited to our 22nd Annual Lunch which marks Holocaust Memorial Day.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 is Fragility of Freedom. In her diary, Anne Frank reflected on the slow loss of freedom that had led her family to go into hiding - "Our freedom was severely restricted by a series of anti-Jewish decrees...You couldn’t do this and you couldn’t do that, but life went on" (Saturday 20 June, 1942).

Anne understood that the loss of freedom had been a slow, subtle process that enabled the building of a climate in which genocide could take place. At the Anne Frank Trust, we use Anne’s writing to teach  young people across the UK about the Holocaust and antisemitism, not to take freedom for granted, and to inspire and empower them to challenge all forms of prejudice today.

The Annual Lunch will be at our usual venue of the London Hilton, Park Lane. The Lunch will be hosted by journalist Jo Coburn, with a poignant candle lighting ceremony, and include the premiere of new short film: Anne Frank Young Ambassadors share their stories.

We are excited that one of Britain's most loved children's authors, Sir Michael Morpurgo will be our guest speaker.

Michael Morpurgo, began writing stories in the early '70's, in response to the children in his class at the primary school where he taught in Kent. One of the UK’s best-loved authors and storytellers, Michael was appointed Children’s Laureate in 2003, a post he helped to set up with Ted Hughes in 1999. Michael has now written over 150 books, including Private Peaceful, Kensuke’s Kingdom, The Butterfly Lion, and War Horse, which became a hugely successful production from the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg. He was awarded an OBE in 2007 and a Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

This year's candlelighters include Holocaust Survivor Eve Kugler BEM and  Eric Murangwa Eugene MBE, survivor of the Rwandan genocide.

We do hope you will join us for our 22nd Annual Lunch, which was founded in 2003 by Rolf Schild OBE and generously supported by Mrs Daphne Schild.

This year’s Annual Lunch is sponsored by pladis.

pladis is one of the world’s leading snacking companies and home to much loved brands including McVitie’s, Ülker and Carr’s.
