We are honoured and delighted that Marie van der Zyl OBE will be chairing the advisory group overseeing an independent review of our education provision. Marie is the granddaughter of a Kindertransportee, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and a trustee of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, among many other roles.

The review is part of our Restoring Trust Plan, responding to concerns raised by the Jewish community in 2022. It will look at how well our programmes reflect Jewish experience and address antisemitism. We are advertising here for a consultant to carry out the review.

Marie says:

"I'm grateful to the Anne Frank Trust for inviting me to work with community colleagues and survivors of the Shoah in overseeing this important and exciting review. The Trust has a tremendous track record of educating young people about the Holocaust and all types of prejudice. I hope we will help its education programme become even more effective, especially around antisemitism and Jewish life, so that the Trust can have strong support from across the community."

The full membership of the advisory group is:

  • Ephraim Borowski, Director, The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities
  • Dr Rachel Century, Director of Public Engagement and Deputy CEO, The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust
  • Dr Agnes Grunwald-Spier MBE, Historian and Holocaust survivor
  • Elizabeth Harris-Sawczenko, Interfaith Consultant
  • Marc Levy, Chief Executive of the Jewish Representative Council for Greater Manchester and North West Regional Manager of The Jewish Leadership Council
  • Dr Dave Rich, Director of Policy, Community Security Trust
  • Sally Sealey OBE, Chief of Staff to Lord Pickles, Government Envoy on Post-Holocaust Issues
  • Dr Martin Stern MBE, Holocaust survivor
  • Dawn Waterman, Director of Education, The Board of Deputies of British Jews

  • Additional advisory expert: Jurmet Huitema-de Waal, Educational Projects Manager, The Anne Frank House Amsterdam.

We are very grateful to Marie and all the group members for the outstanding commitment and expertise that they are bringing to look at our work.

We will publish the review findings in late 2023. For updates, please sign up to our monthly e-bulletin here.
